Hello friends! It’s been a busy few weeks and with Kansas City being on a shelter in place order and the kids being home from school, we’re somehow busier than normal. Keeping the boys busy has been quite the task lately. We have been trying to balance homeschooling, work, and fun. It has been a struggle, but we are making it work. I’ve been so thankful for the boy’s teachers sending over organized schooling plans and then for a work team that is helping to keep our work projects moving along. But there are still lots of other hours in the day! I wanted to share a few things we have been doing recently to keep the kids occupied. These are simple and you may be doing them as well, but here are a few of our favorites right now.
Do an art project! This can be overwhelming to some parents but putting together an art project doesn’t have to be. We always love going to the craft store and crafting up big projects but right now that isn’t an option. We have been keeping busy with painting books, coloring books and simple craft projects we can order through Amazon. Pull out watercolors, make some play dough or print coloring pages off of Google.
Go for a walk! We have been lucky enough to have some amazing weather lately and taken advantage of going on a couple walks everyday. Getting outside is not only good for the kids to burn some energy it also helps so much with stress. Rush takes me on walks all day long and now that we have dog we go on even more walks than ever before.
Build! This is no surprise for you. We LOVE building things in our house. We have en entire room dedicated to LEGOs for the older boys. Between building blocks and LEGOs, I’m pretty sure we could build a whole new house out of what we have. This is a great activity to encourage imagination and work on fine motor skills.
Music lessons! Soren has been working with the kids on learning how to play the guitar. We also recently got a piano and the boys are starting to dabble there. They don’t have a teacher yet, but we’re looking at setting one up through Zoom lessons. If you aren’t musically inclined there are so many good online resources that can help kids learn how to play a new instrument.
Movie night! Who doesn’t love a good movie night? We have been packing the living room so much lately and having family movie nights. I’m starting to run out of things to watch on Disney+. If you have any recommendations send them my way!
Chores! This might not be their favorite but this is a great time to start teaching kids how to sweep, fold laundry, wipe down the kitchen counters, and more! I’ve got a post here about what chores I have my boys help with, but really it changes day by day. They help with what I need help with on a daily basis right now. From the dog to their little brothers, giving them responsibilities does add structure to their day and give them some sense of purpose during this unique time.
There are so many other things we are doing right now as well. I know I’m spending more time talking with my kids. I’m asking them about their school work and their thoughts, talking to them about the virus and breaking up fights between them too. We’re cleaning up dog poop and cracker crumbs and making lots of meals and snacks. We’re also maybe fitting in a game, watching lots of TV and screen time too. It’s all the things. I hope you’re finding time to breath and give yourself lots of grace through this unique time. We’re all finding new ways to make our way through it.
