Mother’s Day is just around the corner. We all have had ideas of what Mother’s Day should look like usually something out of a Hallmark commercial and having that frame of mind meant some Mother’s Days were hard and didn’t live up to my (unrealistic) expectations. I realized that I needed to flip the script on what Mother’s Day meant and even though I’m a mother of five, I have found that the best way to celebrate is to focus on gratitude towards all the moms and mother figures in my life. So many women deserve to be appreciated. Showing others your appreciation is the quickest way to feel happier, and that happiness will pour out to others.
So here are a few ideas to show appreciation for the women in your life this Mother’s Day:
1.A Personal Note or Letter
Even better, organize other family members to write a letter. Handwritten notes make a memorable keepsake. If you have children in your family, have them write or draw something. I love when kids answer questions about a person. The answers are always funny and are great to look back on as they grow.
2. A Monthly Subscription
A subscription is a great way to make her feel loved and remembered all year long. There are so many great options out there like Book of the Month, Birchbox, Causebox, or my personal fave, a weekly floral delivery from our local florist, Thorne Floral. Choose whatever you think she will enjoy most, but usually won’t spend the money on for themselves.
3. New Stationery
New stationary, like pens, markers, notebooks, or sticky notes make great gifts. Pick colors or designs that show her personality. We can’t resist these things. I know new stationery and desk supplies give me a fresh start and make me feel way more organized than I am. Some of my favorites are Paper Source, May Designs, Minted, and Target has some great options too.
4. Gift Certificates or Gift Cards
Go for specialized stores full of things they love but usually don’t buy themselves. I suggest the Container Store, West Elm, Nickel & Suede (obviously). Anything that forces her to treat herself. Something that will make her feel good but might not be practical. It’s fun to shop there, and whatever she buys there will be a treat just for her.
5. Permission to Pamper
A gift certificate to be pampered. Choose someplace she usually goes and spend an amount higher than what she would usually pay. Inspire her to go for the more extended massage or facial or splurge a little on that extra add-on.
6. Get Out of the House
Plan a trip or an outing. It could be a day trip, a concert, comedy show or weekend flight. Something that forces her to get away from it all – even if just for a little while. One year, Soren got me tickets to see Maroon 5, but the concert was in Nashville. So we had to make a weekend getaway out of the experience, and it was great!
7. Housecleaning or Organizational Services
Housecleaning services – like a really thorough deep clean. I promise no mother will ever turn this down. Another idea is to hire a home organizational business. She can choose an area of her home, and they can get her started with a system to keep it organized and kept up. The bonus of this suggestion is that a lot of these businesses are women-owned or even mom-owned. So you’ll be making two moms’ days!
8. Hobby Splurge
Splurge on something for her favorite hobby. We all know what she likes to do, but there’s probably something she wouldn’t buy for herself. Some suggestions are tools for her favorite craft, upgraded sports or fitness items, or a fun tech gadget she’d love.
9. Donate to a Cause
Donate to a cause that is important to her. It shows you know what is important to her. Donating is great if she’s the woman who has it all or someone who is a challenge to gift. Maybe your gift will inspire her to pay it forward or volunteer for the cause, keeping that good feeling going.
10. Support Female-Owned Businesses
Use your Mother’s Day purchase as a chance to support a female-owned, or especially a mom-owned business. No matter what Mom likes, I am sure there’s a female-owned business that would be happy to help. Plus, you’ll be showing two mothers how much you appreciate them.
As we celebrate Mother’s Day this year, I’d encourage you to look outside yourself and go above and beyond in complimenting and showing appreciation to the mother figures in your life. They will feel loved and cherished, and you’ll get the good feels and that little boost of confidence. There is no right way to show gratitude and appreciation to someone.
