I’ve been looking forward to sharing this post for several months now, especially because it’s one that I know you all have been looking forward to as well. I get questions about my living room all of the time and the most asked about item is my couches. We have a big family, and with so many boys, you know our couches see a lot of wear and tear. We’ve purchased several sofas over the years and as we’ve done our research and sat in many couches in a lot of furniture stores. Between Soren’s eye for quality and my eye for design, we aren’t the easiest to please. But through the years, we’ve found one brand that we continue to go back to. Today I’ve partnered with Flexsteel to share our big living room refresh and why we keep going back to their brand over and over again.
When I think about making big purchases like this I always consider a few different things. How long do I intend on using this? Will the boys actively be using these things? How often do I want to clean it? Will it fit in another space if we ever decide to move again? There are so many questions, but it is so important to make sure you answer these questions before making a big furniture purchase. For instance, our bedroom furniture the boys wouldn’t be in that room as often so I could select items that were not necessarily kid friendly.
Our living room is a completely different story. We knew how important it was to have durable, easy to clean, long lasting furniture. But our main living area is the place that we see the most and I want it to look like my style and my taste. There were so many factors to consider, and thankfully Flexsteel is a brand we’ve learned we can count on for that durability and function and then it was just a matter of picking out the style and colors for my taste.
Both sets of couches in our home are actually Flextsteel brand- our living room upstairs and downstairs are both sets that we designed. We love being able to pile onto a big sectional as a family. There is so much seating in a sectional and I feel like this one really fills the space. When we decided to order a new set for the upstairs we moved our current set to the basement and it’s been a great section for the family to use for movies and gathering together in the basement as well.
For our new sectional chose, this time we chose leather. The fabric we had before had looked great, but with kids and now a puppy, Soren and I thought it might be time to try leather for longer durability in our main family area. I wanted leather that stayed in the condition it started so we chose the semi-aniline leather. That means it doesn’t show marks easily. This leather has been so easy to wipe down and to keep clean. Flexsteel recommends using a clean cloth or vacuuming your sofa weekly. It makes cleaning it a breeze which we love! We’ve had no scratches and it looks just as good as new after two months of wear as it did when it arrived. I’m thrilled with it’s durability!
Here are a few other great things about leather that we love!
- Leather is hypoallergenic and best if anyone in your home suffers from allergies.
- Leather repeals most liquids (very important to us).
- Leather is a breathable material and adapts to your body temperature. This is key to staying cool in the Summer and warm in the Winter.
I also love the color we chose. It’s the perfect light gray/taupe so that it doesn’t show any marks from kiddos but it’s as light as possible without being white. I’ve had a really easy time coordinating pillow colors with it and I think it will be incredibly easy to trade seasonal colors in and out with decor throughout the year. We also opted to have the cushions extra filled so that they would hold their shape as long and as well as possible. I’m so glad we did that! As much as I try to keep the cushions on the couch, they inevitable end up in fort mode at some point and as they get handled they can start to lose their shape. I love that the extra fill helps keep them full, tight and as pristine looking as possible for as long as possible.
Our coffee table is also from Flexsteel and this is the first of their other furniture that we tried. We’re loving the look and the quality. The finish on the wood is so durable. It looks like wood, but it’s been finished in a way that liquids can’t penetrate it. Our kids have tried their hand at damaging it and so far- they have been unsuccessful! It’s really been a great addition to the living room! This same table also has matching end tables, sofa tables, entertainment centers, bookshelves, desks and more! It was hard to only get the coffee table but I am slowly trying to talk Soren into a few other matching pieces.
Overall we are loving our living room and cannot wait to make more memories here with family and friends! I can’t recommend Flexsteel enough.
