I am so excited to be talking with Tamara Day of HGTV today on the podcast. Not only did we share our ups and downs of going from a stay-at-home mom to entrepreneur, but it also turns out we share a passion for creativity and both got our entrepreneurial start from a single DIY project.
For those who aren’t familiar with Tamara’s work, she is a designer and host of HGTV’s Bargain Mansions. On her show, she buys and renovates homes in the Kansas City area to give them new life. She is also the CEO and founder of Growing Days Home and Growing Days Design. Crediting her work ethic to her upbringing on a farm, Tamara’s DIY approach, creativity, and optimism allowed her to pursue her passion for renovation and interior design.
But how did Tamara make the leap from mom to designer to HGTV star? Like many entrepreneurs, her path was anything but straight. For Tamara, it all began when she and her husband bought their dream home just in time for the 2008 economic downturn. Forcing her to renovate everything on her own with a tight budget and a lot of creativity, the experience started her on a path to eventually founding her own design firm and home store...and of course hosting her own HGTV show.
What I admire so much about Tamara’s story is that the entire experience especially as a TV host has forced her out of her comfort zone in almost every way. Citing a lifelong battle with performance anxiety and stage fright, her advice is simply to practice and work on your resiliency until the unknown and the unfamiliar became second nature. She shares so much more about her journey, and I can’t wait for you to hear it all. Her story is unique but her experience learning on the job is universal, and she is someone we can all admire.
