This week we’re celebrating seven years of Nickel & Suede. My husband and business partner, Soren, is joining me as we look back on what has changed, what has stayed the same and what are some of our favorite things we learned along the way.
It has been a crazy seven years for us, but I couldn’t imagine life any other way. I almost don’t remember what life was like before. We’ve come such a long way from cutting earrings at my kitchen table. We now have three retail stores, fifty employees, and we will be shipping our one millionth earring soon.
For me, it’s been all the small victories along the way. I remember celebrating every small win because back then they were so hard to come by and it was just the two of us. Every new leather, or new earring design was absolutely world-changing. It’s so rewarding to now be in a role of leadership and have a team. It’s definitely made me more confident. We’ve made it through a lot, so facing challenges has become easier. We’ve done this before. I can handle this. It makes me feel like we can go after more, we can do the big things. I’m so excited to do pop-ups, collaborate with other female-founded businesses and potentially add piercing to our stores. It has been so great to get in front of people and talk about our mission, and to empower women and girls.
For Soren, he admits that he sometimes misses “doing all the things,” but having a team and building structure has been a relief. It’s enjoyable to see other people accomplishing things within the plan we’ve set in place, and it’s a great learning experience to just let go sometimes.
We can’t wait to see what’s in store for Nickel & Suede as we continue to grow and evolve. We’re going to continue to challenge ourselves to make each birthday fun for our team and customers. We’ve made sure to keep the celebration going all week in-stores and online. Be sure to stop by our stores or go to www.nickelandsuede.com to see what we have going on, and enjoy our walk down memory lane!
